Investigations 3 is our K-5 student-centered mathematics resource. It is fully aligned to the content and practice standards in Ohio’s New Learning Standards for Mathematics with a focus on student thinking and understanding. It is an inquiry-based program where students actively explore mathematical ideas to develop understanding and fluency. Students collaborate, investigate, and take part in problem-based learning.


Stow-Munroe Falls City School District values authentic reading experiences for students, explicit instruction in word recognition and comprehension, and a balanced literacy approach that includes guided reading, independent reading, shared reading, and reading aloud. We differentiate instruction for students using methods such as multisensory phonics, word sorting, small group reading instruction with leveled texts, and specific comprehension strategies taught through the gradual release of responsibility. The gradual release of responsibility allows for explicit instruction through teacher modeling of strategies, followed by student practice of the strategies with feedback.


A writing workshop curriculum is used across grades to explicitly teach writing standards and strategies. Writing is assessed and student progress is tracked through pre- and post-unit assessments. Instruction takes the form of mini-lessons, with teacher modeling and student practice included. Following the mini-lessons, students are provided time to write, implementing the strategies that were taught in the minilessons. Teachers provide further instruction through individual conferences with students about their writing.


The science curriculum was designed and developed by teams of Stow-Munroe Falls teachers to align with Ohio’s New Learning Standards for Science. Each science unit focuses on the student as a natural inquirer. A balanced instructional approach is emphasized which utilizes an inquiry/discovery approach as well as direct instruction regarding necessary content and concepts. Students are encouraged to ask questions and problem solve while collaborating with their peers, teachers and experts in the field of science. Civic minded citizens are able to identify the connections between history, geography, economics and government. The interrelation of these concepts drive decisions at a local, national, and global level. With this in mind, the social studies units of instruction strive to develop students knowledge as well as their decision making, no matter their age level. They are encouraged to be active participants in their civic duty whether it’s in the classroom, school, community, club, or team. Building from the K-8 model, social studies experiences in the 9th through 12th-grade levels position students to be active citizens in a globalized world.  Emphasis is placed on a number of different skills needed for success in life after high school.  These skills include, but are not limited to, critical thinking and problem-solving, collaboration across networks, leading by influence, initiative, entrepreneurialism, effective communication, accessing and analyzing information and cultivating curiosity and imagination (Wagner, 2010).  High school social studies instruction leverages these skills so students can draw connections between academic concepts learned in class and the larger world in which students will soon enter upon graduating.
