2008-09 Volunteer Opportunities
Reading Club
Parent and Grandparent volunteers are needed to ask a list of prepared questions
(with answers) on award winning books. Students read these books and when they
successfully answer the questions are able to get credit toward a Reading Club
award and possibly a gift certificate when they reach their goal. Helpers are
needed two days a week – Wednesday and Thursday. Volunteers are needed
from 8:35 AM until 8:55 AM – 20 minutes as well as for a session at lunch
on Wednesday and Thursday as well. Students will be available to test then
from 12:00 Noon to 12:40 PM.
Library Shelving
Volunteers are needed to help shelve books and assist with check out. Helpers
are needed mornings 9:00-11:30 or afternoons at 1:00-2:00. Come just one hour
or more a week; any time you can give would be appreciated.
Noon Time Readers
Noon-Time Readers takes place at lunch recess each Tuesdays from 12:00-12:45
PM, beginning in October through Spring Break in March. Community volunteers
from our local government, business community, and interested parents read
to students a picture book or chapters chosen by the Library following a theme.
Students who choose to participate come to the Library from the cafeteria for
15 to 20 minutes of reading as well as the opportunity to meet their fellow
community members.
S.A.I.L.S. Reading Mentors
Project S.A.I.L.S. (Supporting and Improving Literacy Skills) is a support
program that pairs adult mentors with children who need some extra practice
(or advanced) with their reading/writing skills. Mentors only need to make
a one-hour a week time commitment. Students leave their classrooms once a week
during a conveniently scheduled time during the school day to work with their
mentors. Mentors receive training and support throughout the year. Parents,
retirees, community members, and local college students have made a tremendous
difference in our students’ lives.
Science Night Leadership Team
Science explodes and comes to life in many creative ways within the regular
classrooms BUT some experiments just need more space, time or set up. Volunteers
are needed to work behind the scenes in preparation for this incredible family
evening learning experiment. Help is needed in contacting and researching
local scientists to share their expertise; to help set up and tear down experiment
stations; to be an actual experiment presenter; or to be helping hands as
our students and families move through a school-full of awesome experiments.
Your participation level is based upon your area of volunteering.
Book Company
Volunteers meet every Wednesday from 9-12 up on the stage to publish student
work. This extremely dedicated group of volunteers is highly valued by both
our students and staff. If you like to roll your sleeves up and help get the
job done, we need you! We will train in all areas that you may be asked to
help with.
Art Show & Fine Arts Evening
Students’ artistic abilities are honored and displayed throughout the
year and a culminating family event is held in April. A few leaders are needed
to work with Miss Vidd in the planning and preparation throughout the year
and then many hands are needed for set up on April 3rd and 6th. Tear down helpers
are also needed for the week of April 15th. Some technical lighting and/or
sound system support may also be helpful for our student choir if you have
that talent to share!
Multicultural Fair Leadership Team
Every other year a large group of diverse family cultures are represented in
our school and a select group of our students participate in a local college
day experience. The planning committee is in need of volunteers to coordinate,
locate and create an evening full of rich, cultural displays that illustrate
the many positive influences that come together to make our learning community
a special place to be.
Kinder Registration
Once you have learned the ropes of Riverview, we need you to help ease the
transition for our new families. Volunteers will be needed to assist with paperwork,
man registration tables, copy birth certificates, answer parent questions,
file preparation, and a multitude of individual needs.
Room Parents
Every room needs the creative and intuitive leadership skills of two trustworthy
room parents. The responsibilities vary greatly depending upon each individual
teacher. The basic skills are being able to diplomatically and fairly utilize
the parent helpers and also to coordinate two fun-filled parties.
Field Day
Many parent and community helpers are needed to make this last day of school
sports event a true success. Miss Cugini, our physical education teacher, has
an entire afternoon full of great fun and sport activities. Volunteers help
out in the judging, preparing, and station monitoring. You may get a bit wet
with this event!
Book Fairs
Our PTA runs a book fair to benefit the Riverview library. Volunteers are needed
to help with the daily sales, assist students in making appropriate selections,
setting up, ordering and packing up. This twice a year event is held during
parent-teacher conferences and will be held January 26-30, with set up on January
22nd.
Holiday Shoppe/Craft Making
Holiday time is when our stage area comes to life with the helping hands of
many volunteer ‘elves’. Students come to make selections for their
loved ones and this requires the assistance of a large group of volunteers.
You will be needed to help set up (December 5th), or to assist students (December
8-10th), and to restock items. A holiday craft making session is also in need
of helping hands in December.
Carnival
Each year our PTA hosts the school carnival. All Riverview families are invited
to an evening of fun-filled activities. Volunteers are needed to begin shopping
for prizes, organizing games, coordinating set up procedures at Kimpton and
a wide-variety of events.
Teacher Appreciation Bakers
Several times throughout the year, PTA sponsors luncheons or dinners for the
staff. These special times are to provide the staff with a break during their
regular teaching day and evening conferences or before the first day of school
and open houses. Volunteers with a talent for baking or creating other delightful
goodies are being sought.
Father/Daughter Dance
Volunteers are needed to help decorate and plan this early spring dance for
third and fourth grade girls and their special male adult.
4th Grade Celebration
Volunteers are needed to help plan our send-off celebration for our fourth
graders as they prepare to move on to their Lakeview experience.
Additional Opportunities to volunteer come up throughout the school year
as teachers see the need for specific grade-level or classroom helpers.
These
will be communicated directly to the parents at the grade level or classroom.
Thank you again for ALL of your support of our ‘Excellent with Distinction’ School! Talents are given to us to be shared and our school has been blessed with many, many volunteer hours.
FYI
For the safety of our student and staff, Stow-Munroe Falls City School District
requires all volunteers to be fingerprinted annually.
If you are a new volunteer, we would like you to get a Photo ID badge to
be worn while in the school.
Please call Diane at 330-689-5445 to make arrangements to have your picture
taken.
All volunteers need to go to the Board of Education office (4350 Allen Road)
to have your fingerprints run through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
The district has a computerized Web Check system that makes this process
easy and fast. The district pays for the cost.
We appreciate your desire to volunteer and leave a positive impact on the
educational experience for our students. Thank you in advance for your cooperation
in this
matter.
