"Kindness Matters"

NEW YEAR GREETINGS
Welcome to the start of 2009! There are so many opportunities waiting for each of us to explore. As a school, we anticipate several initiatives making a difference in our overall effectiveness. These include our school-wide guided reading and nightly reading program; our student empowerment initiative; data analysis and cross-grade level planning and our focus on modeling kindness. We are setting high goals for ourselves and our students and thank each of you for your continued support. Wishing you success in achieving your goals as well!

Any Suggestions?
As we come back to school from our wintertime break with renewed energy and focus, you may have fresh ideas or suggestions you feel could help promote a positive and safe environment for Riverview children. Please feel free to enjoy a conversation with your child's teacher to discuss your thoughts. He/She will then be happy to bring your concerns, ideas, or suggestions to Mrs. Harriss.

Science Family Night is coming to Riverview on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 from 6:00-7:30 pm. We are inviting scientists and science students to help us explore the wonders of the world around us. Our school will become a mini science center with demonstrations and experiments for all to experience. Mark your calendars now to come to our great science adventure. Any scientists in our Riverview family who would like to participate in creating a display or station, please contact Mrs. Herczegh in the library.

Reading Club
All our good readers in Reading Club will receive an invitation to our Half-Way Party to be held at lunch on January 29. To be invited, students in the Caldecott Club (2nd or 3rd grade) must read and report on 12 books, Middleberry Club readers (3rd grade) must report on 11 books, and for the Newbery Club (4th grade), reports must be made on four books. Many of our students are very near this goal already, and students still have three weeks of reporting times to reach their total. The holiday break will give many students some extra time to get some reading completed. If your student needs addition books for reading club over the break, remember that Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library has our Reading Club books in their collection as well.

GOODSEARCH.COM
What if Riverview Elementary earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Well, now we can!
GoodSearch.com is a new search engine powered by Yahoo that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just as you would any search engine.
Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Riverview Elementary School - Stow OH as the charity you want to support. Just 500 of us searching four times a day will raise about $7,300 in a year without anyone spending a dime! And, be sure to spread the word!

Kindergarten Registration Date
Tell your friends and neighbors who have school age children that we will be having Kindergarten Registration for the 2008-2009 school year on January 29, at 7:00pm in the school gym. You will need to bring the following items in order to enroll:
* Official birth certificate
* Immunization record
* Proof of residency
* Social Security card
* Driver's license
* Custody papers
Please note that registration night is for ADULTS ONLY!

Book Fair
Book Fair is coming the week of January 26. This is always a favorite time in the library as students get to purchase books for their own, and the proceeds allow the library to purchase some new books for the collection. PTA will be scheduling classes and volunteers in the weeks after break. Look for more information in January.
