The
Stow-Munroe Falls Developmental Preschool, housed at
Indian Trail, has several peer model openings for the
2009-2010 school year.
Peer models are non-disabled children between the ages of 3 and 5 selected
to participate in the integrated preschool program.
“
A peer model takes on a positive role within the classroom and acts
as a role model for children with disabilities,” says Mary Kay
Zgrabik-Misterka, special education supervisor. “While benefiting
from the preschool experience, these children provide peer interaction
and social motivation for the preschoolers with disabilities. Because
all children learn not from adults, but also from watching and interacting
with other children, peer models are a crucial part of our preschool
program.”
For a screening appointment, call Zgrabik-Misterka at 330-689-5430.
The preschool runs Monday-Thursday. Sessions are half-days: 9:00-11:40
a.m. for 3 year-olds and 12:40 - 3:25 p.m. for 4 and 5 year-olds.

Superintendent invited to Governor’s
education conversation
Dr. Russell D. Jones, superintendent of Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools, has been
invited to participate in the Cleveland-area Conversations on Education with
Governor Ted Strickland.
Jones is one of five Northeast Ohio public school superintendents who will be
participating in the conversation with the governor. The Cleveland regional meeting
(which includes Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Carroll, Tuscarawas,
Stark, Portage, Summit, Medina, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties) will
be on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the WCPN Studio (90.3 FM) in Cleveland. The broadcast
will be from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
According to the Conversations on Education website, at each regional forum,
Governor Strickland will give local citizens the opportunity to share their thoughts
and vet proposed ideas on how to effectively fund a system of education that
is innovative, personalized and linked to economic prosperity in Ohio. The meetings
will be broadcast on local PBS stations and streamed live on the Web. Local citizens
and educators not attending the event will be invited to gather for watch parties
and provide feedback within their watch party and online in response to the Governor's
meetings.
“I am honored to be selected by the Buckeye Association of School Administrators
to represent our region in this important meeting,” said Jones. “I
look forward to an opportunity to provide input in the governor’s initiative.”

District
scores improve in Gr. 3 Reading Test
Results from the October Third Grade Reading Ohio Achievement Test
show improvement as Stow-Munroe Falls received a 77 percent “Proficient” score
for all third-graders, compared to 72 percent from October 2007.
In addition, a higher percentage of students were in the top category, “Advanced” at
30 percent, compared to 28 percent last year. In the second highest category
31 percent were “Accelerated,” compared to 28 percent last year.
In the second lowest category “Basic” the district went from 15 percent
in 2007 down to 12 percent this year. In the lowest category “Limited” the
district had 12 percent last year, and that is down to 11 percent this year.
“
We showed progress in all categories,” said Superintendent Dr. Russell
D. Jones. “I am very proud of the success of our students, the work of
our teachers and the leadership of our building principals.”
“Our teachers do a great job teaching our students necessary reading strategies,” said
Linda Klamer, director of curriculum & instruction. “We are very pleased
with our third-graders and their first attempt on a state achievement test.”
The Gr. 3 Reading OAT is administered by the state two times per year - once
in the fall and once in the spring. This is the first experience that students
have with the Ohio Achievement Tests. Third-graders will take a second reading
test in the spring and the highest of the two scores will appear on the Ohio
Local Report Card in August 2009.
