Stow-Munroe Falls High School and Kimpton Middle School

win 2007-08 Harold A. Meyer Award

Stow-Munroe Falls High School and Kimpton Middle School won the Harold A. Meyer Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award from the Ohio High School Athletic Association for 2007-08.

"Character growth has always been an important part of student-athlete development here at SMFHS,” said Athletic Director Cyle Feldman. “I am very proud of our student-athletes who have helped us earn this recognition. This process has helped keep sportsmanship, and its advancement, at the forefront during competition throughout the year."

The award is named in honor of the late Harold A. Meyer, commissioner of the OHSAA from 1969 to 1977. Winners of the Meyer Award receive a banner that can be displayed at their school.

SMFHS and KMS were two of 83 high schools and middle schools selected to receive the award.

The award may be won by each and every OHSAA member school — Grade 7-8 or high school — by meeting certain minimum requirements. The awards are presented to schools that demonstrate they have completed an eight-part program that promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in their schools and communities.

The requirements are as follows:

* A written Board of Education policy on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in extracurricular activities.
* A broad-based sportsmanship, ethics and integrity committee to coordinate the planning and implementation of a sportsmanship, ethics and integrity program.
* Presentations throughout the school year to coaches, athletes, parents, fans and support groups emphasizing the school’s philosophy on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.
* An ongoing campaign that promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.
* An annual evaluation of all coaches in the areas of instruction and demonstration of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.
* A procedure for receiving, investigating and acting upon complaints regarding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.
* A plan for dealing with critical situations such as heated rivalries, overflow crowds and unruly spectators.
* A program for acknowledging/ rewarding examples of good sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

“ I am very proud that our high school and middle school have been recognized by the OHSSA,” said Superintendent Dr. Russell D. Jones. “I appreciate the work of everyone in the athletic department for making this goal a reality.”

The application of the Harold A. Meyer award was a year one action step in the district’s five-year Strategic Plan. This is the second time SMFHS has applied for the award and the first time for Kimpton. SMFHS won the award in 2006-07.
