Dear Parents and Students,

I am looking forward to a year of new experiences in General Music! Please feel free to contact me by email or phone during the year if you have any questions. All the information for my classes will be posted on the Lakeview Link to our district website. Here are the District approved Benchmarks for both levels:

5th Grade

1. Research and identify musical instruments from different historical periods and cultures.
2. Identify, listen and respond to music of different composers.
3. Identify why and how various music affects their lives.
4. Sing and/or play alone and with others.
5. Play a variety of instruments independently and with other contrasting parts.


6th Grade

1. Identify why and how various music affects their lives.
2. Perform a piece of music independently or in a group with technical expression and accuracy.
3. Sing or play alone or with others a varied repertoire of music with identifying musical terms and expressions.
4. Identify various composers and classify them according to chronological historical periods.

COURSE OF STUDY

FIFTH GRADE


• Listening skills and activities based on the performing group “Stomp”
• Study of orchestral instruments and families
• Composers and Conductors of the Classical, Romantic and Modern periods
• Individual and group instruction on recorders
• Study of the decades of Music 1900-2000


SIXTH GRADE


• History of keyboard instruments
• Individual and group instruction on bell sets and keyboards
• “Mad about Guitars” – individual and group instruction on guitars including basic playing skills, composition and performance. Folk guitars are provided: option to bring your instrument to class. Membership in the “Guitar Club” available to payers who would like to work outside of class time.

1. Be prepared – bring required materials to class
2. Be respectful – when someone else is talking you – you are not
3. Be kind – hands and feet to yourself
4. Be safe – no candy, gum, toys or non-musical instruments

CONSEQUENCES

1. Warning – time out from group activity
2. Writing – fill out a “Think Sheet” to reflect on behavior
3. Call to Parents


GRADING

• Students will receive a daily participation grade
• Students will be graded on worksheets and tests
• Students will receive grades for individual and group projects.
