KIMPTON MIDDLE SCHOOL PTSA MEETING

September 9, 2008

Attendance:  14 members were in attendance.

Call to Order:  The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by President Sue Cirner.  Sue welcomed everyone for the start of the new school year.

Minutes:  The minutes of the May 13, 2008 meeting were presented by Doris Deleandro.  The following addition was made to the Principal's Report:  Mr. Knisely asked PTSA to pay the fees for Kimpton to be a part of the National Middle School Association and the Ohio Middle School Association for next year.  The minutes were filed as corrected.

Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Jodie Lawson presented her report.  The balance as of September 9 was $9,556.89.  Profit from the dance was about $1600.  The report was filed for audit.   The Proposed Budget for 2008-2009 was presented.  The increase in the amount for the Green Committee was discussed.  A professional landscaper will be contacted about maintaining the flowerbeds.  Mr. Knisely asked if the Conventions/Conferences item would cover teachers going to conferences.  Karen Wright, the parliamentarian, will check into this. The budget for the Reading & Writing Festival books was increased, as was the Reflections Committee budget.  A motion was made by Laurel Laber, and seconded by Penny Schirra, to accept the proposed budget.  The motion carried.  The audit of the 2007-2008 books was done by Sue Halasz, Doris Deleandro and Dorothy Iwanski.  The books were found to be in good order.  The report was filed.

Correspondence:  Laurie Householder was unable to attend.  Sue Cirner presented the correspondence, which was thank you notes from the staff appreciation luncheon last year and for the welcome back lunch on August 26.

Principal's Report:  Mr. Knisely showed a power point presentation about Kimpton and reported that because of state money and grants we have lots of new technology in the building.  Some staff members within the building will do some of the trouble shooting when there are problems.  Mr. Knisely is looking for a roster of members because volunteers are needed for reading tests and quizzes, tutoring before and after school, help with copying, and possibly help in the library. It was suggested that National Honor Society students from the high school could do some tutoring.  Mr. Knisely presented a need for an Epson LCD projector and an Elmo projector.  The cost for both was $1303.61.  A motion was made by Sue Halasz, and seconded by Jodie Lawson, to purchase the projectors.  The motion carried.

Teacher Representative:  Pam Groom thanked PTSA for the "Welcome Back Luncheon."  All the staff enjoyed the large variety of food.

Council Report:  Cindy Cloud had no report.  The first Council meeting will be Tuesday, September 16.  The elected Parliamentarian has resigned and the Corresponding Secretary is willing to take her position.  Nominations will be taken at the meeting for both positions and voting will occur at the October 21 meeting.

Parliamentarian:  Karen Wright had no report.

President's Report:  Sue Cirner thanked everyone for their help with putting the packets together, Jump Start, the dance and the lunch for the staff.  Pam Groom asked if it was possible to assign the lockers at Jump Start so the students could become familiar with their combinations.  All committee chairs have been filled except for Staff Appreciation and the Green Committee.  Important dates:  Monday, September 22 -- School Board Meeting, 6:00 pm at the High School; October 6-10 -- Book Fair; Friday, October 31 -- early release day; and Tuesday, November 4 -- Election Day!

 Committee Reports:

Membership:  Sue Cirner reported that the membership is over 400.  Pam Groom will remind the staff to join PTSA.

Book Fair:  Karen Wright will talk with Scholastic and the librarian about the book fair and a possible discount on the books.  The book fair brochures will go to the language arts teachers to be distributed to the students.

Conference Dinners:  Dorothy Iwanski is willing to provide a food for each of the conference nights.  The first one is October 16.  It was suggested to have something light, like appetizers.

Reflections:  Christine Baker was not present.  She will have the rules for distribution.

Spirit Wear:  Penny Schirra is collecting the forms until September 18.  Some parents have not seen the forms so they will be copied and sent home.

New Business:  Discussion was held about building improvements including a sign for the front, arrows in the parking lot, and repair of the potholes in the back parking lot.   A service project for student members was also discussed, possibly building benches and planters for the front of the building.  A meeting will be planned for during the school day for student members.
