KIMPTON MIDDLE SCHOOL PTSA MEETING

 

November 11, 2008

 

 

Attendance:  11 members were in attendance.

 

Call to Order: President Sue Cirner called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. 

 

Minutes: Doris Deleandro presented the minutes of the October 14, 2008 meeting.  The minutes were filed as presented. 

 

Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Jodie Lawson presented her report.  The balance was $10,005.29 as of November 11, 2008.  Two checks have been returned by the bank for insufficient funds.  Jodie has sent letters and is waiting for responses.  Mr. Knisely suggested asking the bank to waive the fees.

 

Correspondence:  Laurie Householder was not present.  Sue Cirner had several thank yous from the staff for the conference dinner and one for the Elmo and the projector.

 

Principal's Report:  Mr. Knisely reported that a new levy would not be on the ballot in May.  A process of dialogues with the community will begin and no cuts will be made for this current school year.  Mr. Knisely has tickets for the Stow Foundation holiday event.   

 

Teacher Representative:  Pam Groom expressed thanks from Jana Martin for the sweatshirts that will be awarded at the assembly before the winter break.  Diane Boyer is looking for PTSA membership forms for the students.  She is the Character Counts representative for Kimpton and she would like the students to join PTSA.  She is starting a program of ticket rewards when students show good character.

Pam had several requests from the staff.  Diane Boyer requested $250 for gift cards that can reward students for improving academically or behaviorally.  A motion was made by Jodie Lawson, and seconded, to provide Diane Boyer with $250 to be used for gift card rewards for students.  The motion carried.  Mike Eckart, an eighth grade math teacher asked for funds to purchase 10 calculators,

the ones approved for the OGT.  A motion was made by Jodie Lawson, and seconded, to earmark $400 in the budget for the math department to purchase calculators as needed.  The motion passed.  Mr. Knisely asked that funds be made available for the Character Counts program that he could disperse as needed.  A motion was made by Doris Deleandro, and was seconded, to establish a fund of $300 for Character Counts, to be dispersed by Mr. Knisely.  The motion carried. 

 

Council Report:  Angie Thomas was not in attendance.  Sue Cirner had her Council report.  The SMFCSD Foundation event will be December 4 at Silver Lake Country Club.  Members may follow legislative issues on Capwiz at ohiopta.org.   

 

President's Report:  Sue Cirner reported that she attended the District 13 Conference in Tallmadge.  She attended the presidents' session and a session on membership.  Ohio PTA is looking for all units to increase membership as a means to increase lobbying power and effectiveness.  Sue will have a sign-up sheet at the January meeting for working at the high school concession stand on February 13. 

 

 

Committee Reports:

 

            Membership:  Sue Cirner reported that the membership is 428.  Fifty-five staff members have  joined PTSA.

 

            Conference Dinners:  Dorothy Iwanski reported that the potluck dinner on October 16 went very well and was appreciated by the teachers.  The next dinner will be November 20 and the menu is pizza, salads and desserts.  The pizza will be purchased and members will donate salads and desserts.  Help is needed from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.  E-mail Dorothy if you can make something or if you can be there to help.  Her e-mail address is:  Stowdot665@aol.com. 

 

            Reflections:  Christine Baker was not present.  The names of the winners from Kimpton will be in the newsletter. 

 

            Blood Drive:  Kimpton will have a Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday, January 23, 2009.

 

Unfinished Business:  There was no unfinished business.

 

New Business:  Mr. Knisely is planning a Fine Arts Festival for May 7 and would like PTSA to help with labor needs.  Science Olympiad cancelled the dance on October 31.  An alternative fundraiser is planned, involving teachers taking a pie in the face.

 

Announcements:

 

There will not be a meeting in December.  The next meeting will be Tuesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m.
