Builder’s Club


Builder’s Club is the middle school chapter of the Kiwanis Club. It is a student-led community service organization which operates under regulations and draws its members from the 7th and 8th grade student body.
Builder’s Club objectives:
-To provide opportunities for working together in service to the school and community
-To develop leadership potential
-To foster the development of a strong moral character
-To encourage loyalty to the school, the community and the nation
Time involved: Meets two to four times a month after school hours.

Cheerleading

Cheerleaders are chosen for 7th and 8th grade football and basketball. More information will appear in the “Stow Sentry” regarding try-outs. Sports Physicals must be on file for a student to tryout for cheerleading.

Choir

Kimpton offers a 7th Grade Choir and an 8th Grade Choir.
Time involved: One class period per day at Kimpton for practice
Special events: Junior High Solo and Ensemble Contest.
Concerts: Winter and Spring Concerts
Various field trips

Drama Club


The Kimpton Drama Department provides opportunities for students to develop and showcase their talents in the Performing Arts. The Drama Department’s most prominent undertaking each year is the Spring Play, usually presented during the first weekend in March and involving over one hundred students in both the Cast and Crew. The Drama Coaches also sponsor a Talent Show and/or a “Lip Synch” contest each year to provide additional performance opportunities for students.

 

Geography Bee

Kimpton Middle School participates in the National Geographic Geography Bee each January. Four contestants are chosen from each team at Kimpton. The winner takes a written test which is mailed to National Geographic. Those with qualifying scores are invited to the Ohio State Geography Bee. The winner in each state is invited to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Bee with college scholarships given to the top participants.

Interscholastic Sports

Students must have a sports physical on file before they can tryout for any of these teams per OHSAA rules. Please watch the Stow Sentry for tryouts. Also, announcements are made at school regarding tryouts. According to the bylaws of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, a student enrolling in seventh grade for the first time will be eligible for the first grading period regardless of previous academic achievement. Thereafter, the student must have a 1.500 grade point average and receive no more than one failing grade for a class the preceding grading period per The Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Education Policy.
The following sports are offered at Kimpton:
Fall: Cross-country Co-Ed, Football, Girls’ Volleyball, Co-Ed Soccer
Winter: Wrestling, Boys' Basketball, and Girls’ Basketball
Spring: Boys' and Girls' Track

Intramurals


Intramurals are daily during lunchtime. Teams compete in various sports: basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, soccer, etc. T-shirts are given to all tournament winners. Teams are voluntary and students must submit a team roster to compete in intramurals. All students are encouraged to participate. Lunch lasts 15 to 20 minutes. Then all students go to the gym to participate or watch the intramural competition.

Jazz Band

Rehearsals: Thursday nights, 6:30 to 8:00, starting in November.
Special Events: Winter Band Concert,
Spring Jazz Concert with high school Jazz Bands
Jazz Festival at the local or national level.

MathCounts

The National Society of Professional Engineers sponsors MathCounts competition for seventh- and eighth-grade students. Kimpton students have placed in regional and state competitions. One student was a State champion and attended Nationals.
Time involved: Practice after school for students, October to December. In January,
Fee: School pays the $40 fee.
Special Events: January, students take school math competition test.
The team of 6 to 8 students practice in January and February.

Orchestra

Kimpton offers a 7th Grade String Orchestra and an 8th Grade String Orchestra
Time involved: One class period per day at Kimpton for practice with some after school rehearsals and concerts.
Special Events: Holiday Tree Festival Concert at Quaker Square in November
All-City Wide Orchestra Concert at High School in December and May
Music In Our Schools Month Concert at Kimpton in March
Solo and Ensemble Contest TBA
Music In The Parks Festival/Competition in May
Field Trips to perform at Elementary Schools in April and May

Power of the Pen

 

Power of the Pen Ohio Interscholastic Writing League is an academic writing team of six seventh-graders and six eighth-graders. A tournament includes three rounds of prompt writing with all seventh-graders answering the same prompt in Round 1, a different for Round 2, and a third for Round 3. Eighth grade has three different topics.
Time involved: Late November through May (state tournament). Practices are after school until 4:00 one day a week.
Fee: No fee for students.
Special events: District Tournament - January
Regional Tournament - March
State Tournament - May

Reading and Writing Festival

The Reading and Writing Festival is a day of activities at Kent State University for those who have read seven books. An author of young adult books interacts with students.
Time involved: Students read seven books (October to April); then take a book quiz (one period); and one school day at KSU.
Special events: Reading and Writing Festival at KSU.

Scholastic Art Exhibit


Each year in January, Kent State University sponsors the National Scholastic Art Exhibit. Entries are drawn from a five-county area and include exemplary artwork from high school, junior high and middle school. Gold Key award-winning work is sent to the National Scholastics Art Exhibit and is considered for inclusion in the national exhibit.
Time involved: Artwork is drawn from ongoing projects in art class through December.
Special events: Students take a field trip to KSU to view the show.

Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition of outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. Most of the events in Science Olympiad are team competitions that require group planning, teamwork and cooperation.
Time involved: Practices are held after school once a week until 4:30 p.m.
Fees: $25.00 to $30.00 (includes a T-shirt purchase). Also, hotel rooms and food for the State Competitions.
Special Events: Invitational Competitions in January and February. Regional Competition: March

Spelling Bee

 

The Spelling Bee program is sponsored by Scripps and NIE at the Akron Beacon Journal.
It is a spelling competition. Word Power is a vocabulary competition.
Time involved: Spelling Bee and Word Power practices begin in October and are announced. Practices are once a week until 4:15 p.m.
Fee: $1.00 approximately to purchase Paideia. This booklet contains words that are used to select Kimpton’s top 12 spellers on a written test given during the school day and help Word Power participants.
Special events: Kimpton Bee, Stow All-City Bee, District Bee, Regional Bee, National Bee. Dates TBA.

Ski Club

The Kimpton Ski Club is open to all students and parents.
Time involved: Wednesdays in January and February from 4 to 9 p.m. at Brandywine Ski area.
Fee: $45 to $160 per student, depending on Brandywine's fees and equipment rentals (if needed).
Special events: Pizza party at the end of the season.

Student Council

Student Council facilitates student and community activities throughout the school year.
Time involved: Monthly meetings after school, fund-raising, making posters, decorating, organizing various student activities and volunteering.
Special events: 8th Grade Dance, Spirit Days, Various student activities (pizza parties, movies, food drives, etc.).


Word Power


This is a vocabulary bee competition sponsored by “Reader’s Digest” magazine. Language arts team teachers select Word power contestants. The top qualifiers on each team compete during the school day for the grade level champion. The top 7th and 8th grade students take a written test to see if they qualify for State competition. The champion for the State travels to the National competition.
Time involved: Spelling Bee and Word Power practices begin in October and are announced. Practices are once a week until 4:15 p.m.
