SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
The Science

for our invitational meets already. We will participate in the Solon
meet on Feb. 7 and the Mentor meet on Feb. 14.
TEAM 7-1
Team
7-1’s journey to the Naturealm was quite a success. The weather
was beautiful, the reptile man was very informative and the birds ate
right out of our hands. We are following books-on-tape in our advisories
to enhance fluency. Our thinking with data unit is now leaving the social
studies classroom and heading towards the math classroom. We’re
also excited about our upcoming bowling field trip. TEAM
7-2
History is currently working on an Egyptian drama project. Math
is discovering algorithms for integers and equivalent expressions.
Science is studying
storms and storm safety. language arts are understanding and applying
context clues through SSR and other media. Art is currently involved
in a project about panoramic landscapes.
TEAM
7-3
Students on Team 7-3 are off to a great start. In Language Arts,
students are reading the novel Tangerine. Weather and climate are
being studied
in science. In math, the order of operations, coordinate grid and
integers are being explored. Civilizations on the Asian Continent
are being
investigated in social studies. An Awesome Autumn Alternative Learning
Day was held
on Friday, Oct. 24.
TEAM
7-4
Team 7-4 has had a great opening to the 2008-2009 school year.
Both staff and students have completed the introductory process
and are
now working
through the standards of the first quarter for each subject. Our
students have had the opportunity to indulge in some culinary delights
and nutritional
background during their stay in Family Consumer Science. In language
arts, students have completed their independent book reviews over
Newbury award winners, many citing this is the first time they
have completed
a book on their own. In math students continue to work on the order
of operations and working to achieve the ability to verbally express
themselves
in an extended response format. In science the students have finished
up their observations of weather and are completing a five-step
project as their assessment. In history, the students have completed
their
reviews of ancient river valley civilizations and are turning east
toward India
and China. Staff and students are eagerly awaiting conferences
and the second quarter to see what educational delights are next.
MATH RESOURCES
Mathematics resources for helping at home are available and still growing
at two of our district mathematics sites: http://www.smfcsd.org/math/athomelNDS.htm (for grades K-5) and http://www.smfcsd.org/math/athomeCM2.htm (for grades
6-8). These pages include a new, growing collection of homework help
videos, links to pages that include specific help for most individual
units and lessons in each grade, ideas for fluency practice (online
and offline), suggestions for helping students with writing about math,
fun math activities that can be done at home, and a variety of other
resources. For less frequent internet users, one possibility is to visit
this site once and print everything that you might want; then, you have
access to it at any time.

TARDY / ATTENDANCE
INFORMATION
Students’ attendance is a key part of success in school. By law,
students must be in school daily and on time. It is understood that
there are times when students are late or absent. In these cases, appropriate
notification by a parent is needed. Please call the school prior to
9:00 a.m. if a student is sick or will be late due to a medical appointment.
Otherwise, tardies and absences will be marked “unexcused”.
Kimpton has a series of consequences in place for unexcused absences
from classes, and these along with Truancy Referrals to the Summit
County Juvenile Court will be issued as dictated by procedure and law
directives. In the case of medical appointments, parents are asked
to get medical excuse forms from the doctor’s office to bring
to school.

Football The 7th and 8th grade wrapped up their seasons this October on high
notes. Each squad performed admirably, working diligently each week
to prepare for the next challenge before them. Each player, coach and
parent should be congratulated for their efforts this year. Woody Hayes
once said, “You win with people,” and though every outcome
wasn’t a victory, because of the dedication and teamwork of each
of the gridiron units, the season has been a successful one.
