Highland Elementary School
Fun Facts:
Our
school was built in 1938 and holds 17 classrooms. This is the oldest building
in the district and has two floors - a unique and very traditional design.
The school had additions built in 1966 and 1973. The facility also includes
one team-teaching classroom at grade one.
We
provide hands-on learning and meaningful work for our students.
Highland
has Internet access in each classroom. All staff members have been
trained in using technology across the curriculum. Teachers have
also participated in a special staff development program in the
area of literacy. All students receive small group guided reading
instruction at their instruction level each day. This is accomplished
through the use of our special collection of tradebooks.
Children
are also provided with music, art, physical education, and library
services. A guidance counselor visits the school one day per week.
Children with special needs are instructed by a resource room facilitator,
tutors or our part-time speech and language therapist. A registered
school nurse is at the school every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The
PTA provides a high level of parent involvement at Highland. The
association is very supportive of students' academic and social
growth and sponsors many after school programs.
Ongoing
Fund-raisers have helped install new equipment on the playground.
